Disaster Risk Assessment & Mitigation
We are in an ever-changing world and of late there has been an increase in the frequency of natural disasters due to the climate change. Floods, droughts, forest fires, typhoons and such like are increasingly devastating. These are on top of the naturally occurring events such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and landslides.
At Orient Research, our team have been focussing on assisting our clients with the engineering and management aspects of mitigating such possible disasters such as earthquakes. In engineering, we focus on a better understanding of the sciences of such disasters, historical failures, contemporary knowledge and state of the art materials and devices and then applying them into more resilient design to withstand these forces of nature.
For the management of disaster, we have been focussing on the combination of the knowledge of structural behaviour, probable disaster scenarios, information gathering from implementation of early warning systems, understanding of secondary risk elements following the occurrence of a disaster, possible safe/protected egress routes, coordination with rescue and emergency teams, etc., into a plan to mitigate the risk to loss of lives. We have the experience of various aspects of risk mitigation from the projects that we have been involved in over the years.
The disaster mitigation services that Orient Research provides include:
• preparation of an emergency management action plan
• structural and non-structural risk assessment studies
• design of structural health monitoring and early warning system
• assessment of safe protected route of egress
• design of information system for dissemination to all stake holders
• training of trainers for emergency response
